"In 2009 Cabell County celebrated its 200th birthday - 'The Bicentennial 1809-2009' and KYOWVA Genalogical and Historical Society felt a special recognition was in order. This publication celebrates this anniversary with pictures and descriptions of special events, places, people and history of the area. Of particular interest was the creation of the city of Huntington. Beginning in 1870 men came from New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Ohio, Virginia and many other areas of the country to join forces and complete the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway from the Chesapeake Bay to the Ohio River. But this was just the beginning. All up and down the Ohio River, when word began to spread that a town was being created 'on the Ohio River between Guyandotte and the Big Sandy', men took notice and came to check out the area. Most decided to stay and join the effort. Steamboats plying the Ohio and Guyandotte brought others into the area and they saw a great opportunity to develop industries, stores, and businesses of every description for a growing community. Locals in Guyandotte and surrounding areas saw the need to provide services to the number of newcomers--and a town was born. 'South Landing' or 'Brownville' and Holderby's Landing were all names used for the area before Huntington became a town. Marshall Academy established in 1837 had become Marshall College and it became the first post office address for the new town. Much later annexation took in Central City, Guyandotte and Harveytown. KYOWVA has used over 230 photographs of people, hotels, theatres, hospitals, floods and many other events to tell the story in 191 pages plus 130 pages of individual family histories--a total of 321 pages of history.
