Stephen Ilardi received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Duke University, and has spent the past two decades as an active researcher, university professor, and clinician. He has treated several hundred patients suffering from depressive illness and other serious disorders, and has authored over forty scholarly articles and papers on mental illness.
Dr. Ilardi and his clinical research team developed and refined a highly effective program for clinical depression: Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC), an innovative treatment is grounded in the insight that human beings were never designed for the sedentary, indoor, socially isolated, sleep-deprived, fast-food-laden, frenzied pace of 21st-century American life. While the use of antidepressants has increased in recent years, so has the rate of depression. Ilardi (clinical psychology, Univ. of Kansas), a private clinician, presents his alternative approach based on cognitive-behavioral therapy with an anthropological twist. His "Therapeutic Lifestyle Change" (TLC) model prescribes dietary supplements, physical exercise, sunlight exposure, social support, and improving sleep patterns-and discourages "ruminating" on negative thoughts. Research findings (including the author's own study on the treatment's efficacy) are translated into readable terms. The book concludes with a treatment schedule, trouble-shooting guide, and professional bibliography. Verdict: The positive aspects of the TLC model are obvious, but Ilardi's composite program-rooted in the hunter-gatherer way of life-is novel.
