Summary
This is a comprehensive introduction to the conflicts that ensued between Native Americans and their European encroachers from the earliest recorded skirmishes to the last battles only three years before the commencement of the American Civil War. Beginning with the Powhatan Wars of 1610-1646 and concluding with the Third Seminole War of 1855-1858, author Michael Ports has assembled all the pertinent facts related to the scores of battles or campaigns that arose as clashes of civilizations on the advancing frontier.

Library Journal Review
With this history book, travel guide, and genealogical resource, Ports (Jefferson County, Georgia, Tax Lists, 1796-1803) focuses on conflicts between Native American tribes and European settlers in the Southern United States prior to the Civil War. The title covers well-known and more obscure struggles, including Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole wars, as well as the involvement of Native American tribes in the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars. The author provides context for each conflict, describes the major campaigns and participants on both sides, and summarizes the consequences. For each conflict, Ports also lists useful publications and offers short descriptions, addresses, and websites or contact information for relevant historical buildings, parks, monuments, or battlefields. The second half of the volume is aimed at genealogists researching Native American or Euro-American ancestors who were involved in the battles. Organizing resources by federal and state repositories and including tribal archives, Ports gives an overview of collections, noting helpful indexes and guides and doling out advice for researchers. -VERDICT Highly recommended for genealogists researching individuals who may have been involved in these wars or for anyone interested in early U.S. history.-Sara Shreve, Newton, KS © Copyright 2017.
