School Library Journal Review
Gr 5-9-Although everyone feels anxious on occasion, the author makes a distinction between everyday jitters and overwhelming, debilitating anxiety. The text is straightforward and factual, but reassuring in tone. Readers will learn how to recognize symptoms and how to prevent panic from controlling their lives. Some attacks are triggered by caffeine, but others are set off by intangibles, such as nonspecific fears building on themselves. Treatments include drugs and counseling, but also deep breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques. A list of organizations dedicated to helping people cope with panic and anxiety is included. The format is open, the print size inviting, and the text is broken up with full-color and black-and-white photos. This brief but helpful introduction might steer young sufferers to treatment and self-help.-Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010.
