Summary
Summary
Major depressive disorder is caused by a combination of brain chemistry, family history, distorted thinking, and a person's emotional environment, according to most experts. Conservative estimates suggest that major depression affects 1 percent of all preschoolers, 2 to 3 percent of elementary school-aged children, and 6 to 8 percent of teens. Yet as many as two-thirds of kids with depression don't get the help they need, according to the National Mental Health Association. With medication and therapy, depression can be treated and controlled.Written in clear and straightforward language, ""Living with Depression"" examines this disease and provides teens with the information they need to understand the nature of depression and treatments. Sidebars, appendixes, and further reading guide additional exploration of this timely topic. This accessible guide is ideal for readers living with depression or those who have family members or friends who are coping with it.

Booklist Review
Written by a licensed clinical psychologist, this accessible, sensibly organized resource in the Teen's Guides series offers young adults concise information about depression and its treatments. Miller touches upon subjects that include symptoms, the difference between depression and the blues, and bipolar disorder. Chapters on treatments offer detailed information on psychotherapy, antidepressants, and self-help approaches such as diet, exercise, and stress management. Miller's discussion of antidepressants covers both widely used and lesser-known medications, noting side effects and food and drug interactions for each. He also addresses recent controversies that have arisen over the negative effects these drugs may have on adolescents and explains how untreated depression can lead to problems like cutting and eating disorders. Numerous sidebars elaborate on the text. Appendixes include a glossary and extensive directories of associations and resources, including patient-assistance programs that can help defray treatment costs. Given recent reports about increasing diagnoses of young people with depression and the rise in teen suicide, this book is a timely, useful resource.--Sullivan, Ed Copyright 2007 Booklist
