Summary
Summary
For many years, people who suffered from depression or bipolar disorder were stigmatized for their problems. However, today most scientists believe that these illnesses are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain and can be corrected with medication and talk therapy. In an accessible, easy-to-read format, Depression and Bipolar Disorder provides students with the basic facts, including the causes and treatments, to help students better understand the various problems associated with these mental disorders.

School Library Journal Review
Gr 9 Up-Thakkar discusses the types of depressive disorders and provides information about the bipolar spectrum disorders, formerly called manic depressive disorders; and covers other mood disorders, including postpartum depression and seasonal affective disorder. Teens can consult this work for etiologies, symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and therapies, including an extensive discussion of pharmacological agents. Much of the material is based on current research in brain architecture and chemistry and would be most appreciated by serious students. Full-color photos and diagrams, case studies, and informational sidebars, as well as glossary terms in boldface, are nicely integrated into the text. Because this title can be used for reports and for medical advice and because there are few books for this age group dealing with these subjects, it is a valuable addition to secondary school and public library collections.-Caroline Geck, Kean University, Union, NJ (c) Copyright 2010.
