In a field glutted with books, this one will clearly rise to the top as one of the best. Zerbe does an excellent and unusually literate job of describing the depth and breath of the various eating disorders. She includes substantial case studies that reflect the numerous psychological pains and physiological complications throughout treatment. Failed treatments are also discussed. These are excellent chapters on eating disorders in infants, children, athletes, and older women, as well as one on reclaiming the body. The chapter on medical complications is easy to read, making it especially useful for nonmedical professionals. The psychological measurement standards DSM-III, the current DSM III-R, and the proposed DSM-IV Criteria for eating disorders are included. The bibliography is excellent, particularly the psychoanalytic references. Recommended for graduate students, researchers/faculty, professionals, and practitioners. R. Kabatznick; Queens College, CUNY
